A Calling I Couldn’t Ignore – My Journey Into Herbal Healing

A Calling I Couldn’t Ignore – My Journey Into Herbal Healing

I come from a long line of herbal believers. My great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother — from the Campbell and Samuel families — carried the knowledge of our Arawak heritage. Our family roots trace back to the Northwest region of Guyana, and we are also of Seraphin descent from West Africa, a lineage with a rich herbal tradition.

In our family, herbs were more than just plants — they were medicine, food, and spiritual tools. But as a child, I never thought I’d be the one carrying on that tradition.

Years later, I fell seriously ill. I went to different doctors, took all the medications they gave me. They would help for a few days, but then I would get worse. I was frustrated, tired, and searching for answers.

Then one day, I got what I can only describe as a call from heaven.

At the time, I was working security for a company called Brands Security. My main post was at the Government Technical Institute (GTI), but every Sunday, they would move me from GTI to the National Park in Georgetown.

From 4 to 6 each Sunday, I would walk through those gardens. I began to notice the herbs growing there, and in my spirit I would hear:
“You need to pick these herbs.”

But I was ashamed. Afraid. I didn’t want anyone to see me picking herbs — I thought they might laugh at me. So every Sunday, I turned back.

Until one Sunday, I decided: Enough.
I picked those herbs — seven different kinds — and took them home. I boiled them, and I drank the tea.

The healing started instantly.

From that day forward, the company moved me to a different post — the archives — and I never worked at National Park again. Looking back, I believe God had placed me there for a reason. The only place I could find those herbs was in that garden.

That was the turning point.

My healing didn’t just happen in my body — it happened in my spirit. I began to understand that my talents, my abilities, and even my dreams were part of something greater. Most of my skills come to me in dreams. If I don’t dream it, I don’t master it. But when I do, I can learn it quickly and naturally. Herbal healing was one of those gifts.

I remember being in church when the preacher said to the congregation:

“Sometimes you keep running and running, trying everything to fix your problems. But the answer is to go back to your roots.”

That’s when it hit me. My roots — my Arawak and West African heritage, my family’s herbal knowledge — had been there all along.

From then on, I embraced my calling.

I started researching herbs, learning how to make oils from scratch, discovering the healing properties in seeds and plants. My mother taught me:
“Never make a product for others that you wouldn’t use yourself.”

So everything I make — whether it’s soap, oils, or creams — I use first. If it’s not good enough for me, it’s not good enough for my customers.

My journey has been guided not just by my own will, but by encouragement from people around me — my former school teacher, my neighbors, and my community. They’ve pushed me to become who I am meant to be.

Herbal healing is not just my business.
It is my natural calling, my gift, and my way of giving back.
